Buttercup 03:02
Can you, Call me, In a different state of mind? She was always just a friend of mine, You’ve let your assumptions run wild. Butter me up buttercup, I need a little liquor in my cup, to feel alive. You’re the king of cruel, It’s a different story, You cut me loose, Soon as I run for it. The king of cruel, You’re the king of cruel alright. Do you feel alive? You think I don’t need this, Cut me and I bleed it. Would you drain me dry? Bite until you break skin, God I find this loving tiring. Nobody knows, everybody wants something. Nobody knows, no nobody knows, Nobody knows, no nobody knows. Can’t this wait till the morning? I’ve not got the energy for it tonight. I struggle to sleep now, Heavy is the head that wears the crown. I’m at your feet now, Withering in your power. Your power. Nobody knows of it, Taste the nectar on your lips, Get a hold of it. Nobody knows, no nobody knows, Nobody knows, no nobody knows, Nobody knows, no nobody knows Do you feel alive? You think I don’t need this, Cut me and I bleed it. Would you drain me dry? Bite until you break skin, God I find this loving tiring. Nobody knows, everybody wants something. Nobody knows, no nobody knows, Nobody knows, no nobody knows.

You think a lot of me, I’m never sure why you do, Chaos is calling me, Chaos is calling me through. I could get used to this, Usually I’m trying my best to improve, Chaos is calling me, Chaos is calling me through. I can’t win the fight, Honey on my own, It could pass me by, Or have me by the throat, Or have me by the throat. Can you get what you want (out of me)? Honey you know I (I believe). I can be too indecisive, When you cut me I bleed. Take it, or leave it now. Fuck it, I’m feeling down. (clean: “you know I’m feeling down”) We can get it right this time round, We can get it right this time round. I can’t win the fight, Honey on my own, It could pass me by, Or have me by the throat, Or have me by the throat. Can you get what you want (out of me)? Honey you know I (I believe). I can be too indecisive, When you cut me I bleed. Can you get what you want (out of me)? Honey you know I (I believe). I can be too indecisive, When you cut me I bleed.

Call you a criminal, Cause you took my heart. My patience is thin you know, But we’ve come this far, We’ve come this far. Say it’s unjustified, The way you spent my time. Manipulate, is it too late again? Divert my eye, Divert my eye. Honey is it too late I’ve been, Telling you it’s all the timing of it, The timing of it The timing of it City lights take me, Spend all the loose change I’ve been, Saving up lately, Is it too much to ask for, You to come through I’m, Missing those eyes. Turns out, I’m in awe of you, you know that by now. Infatuated, lost in haze, disorientated, I now, Wonder if you’ll ever know. Honey is it too late I’ve been, Telling you it’s all the timing of it, The timing of it. City lights take me, Spend all the loose change I’ve been, Saving up lately, Is it too much to ask for, You to come through I’m, Missing those eyes. You to come through I’m, Missing those eyes. I get lost in all the (I get lost in all), I get lost in all the, I get lost in all the (I get lost in all). City lights take me, Spend all the loose change I’ve been, Saving up lately, Is it too much to ask for, You to come through I’m, Missing those eyes. You to come through I’m, Missing those eyes.

Best Of Me 02:50
Take it or leave it, Sick of staring at the ceiling now. Curse you under my breath, Stuck inside, Can feel the chaos under my head calling out. Do I make it difficult, difficult? I can hear the chaos calling, You can never figure me out. You were only asking after me, Got to grips with it, Am I too cynical? Never know what I mean, Yeah you never know what I mean. No high fidelity, Just negativity, Stressed out and I’m looking for some clarity, You don’t see the best of me, best of me. Trigger under my throat, What is it that you really want most? You can find me in the jungle, Jungle. You cannot leave me in these dire straits, We said forever where are you baby? This situations driving me crazy, Crazy, crazy. You were only asking after me, Got to grips with it, Am I too cynical? Never know what I mean, Yeah you never know what I mean. No high fidelity, Just negativity, Stressed out and I’m looking for some clarity, You don’t see the best of me, best of me. Hypothetically, just insecurity, Stressed out and I’m looking for some energy, You don’t see the best of me, best of me. It’s just another mundane Monday, we’ll make it out of here someday, Soon, soon. It’s just another awkward landing, I’ll make it out of here standing. You, you. No high fidelity, Just negativity, Stressed out and I’m looking for some clarity, You don’t see the best of me, best of me.

Cold, cold, cold around here. She said, I’ve not seen your face, For what feels like years. Excuse the mess, I left it as it was. And you’re not around here, Anymore. I miss you and this miscommunication’s, Got me going mad, I’m losing patience. Anything we had could go to waste, And I can’t make your face out, Anymore. She said, This February’s cold, I’m scared, Of ever growing older, World upon my shoulders, Where did the light go? Where didn’t light go? Missing moments more than regularly. Quit contemplating could I come home, Suppose I’m happy cause I said so, Got what I wanted so I guess I should be. I miss you and this miscommunication’s, Got me going mad, I’m loosing patience. Anything we had could go to waste, And I can’t make your face out, Anymore. She said, This February’s cold, I’m scared, Of ever growing older, World upon my shoulders, Where did the light go? Where didn’t light go? Where did the light go? I’m broke and feeling it. Every second’s stacked with all this mundane shit. Every Friday closes, I no longer notice, What it’s done to me.

about

Modern indie dancefloor dreamers The Manatees release a brand new single called 'Call You A Criminal' on September 27th. This is the first track to come from the trio's second EP 'Different State Of Mind' which will be released on 23rd Feb 2024 and is produced by Tarek Musa (Spring King / Dead Nature). It follows a bouncy summer of shows at Y Not Festival, Isle Of Wight and BBC Introducing x The Hundred at the Ageas Bowl in Southampton and ties in with an 11 date UK headline tour - see dates below.

It all fits, too: hailing from a sleepy town on the south coast of Englandshire and now residing in London, The Manatees consist of hyperactive schoolfriends Jay, Tyler and Miller and a litany of unfeasibly large trousers. Their shiny-but-questioning alt.melodic quests touch on hip hip samples, funk-driven basslines and sparkling guitars and have drawn knowing comparisons with everyone from MGMT to Klaxons via Jungle, Wolf Alice and The Strokes.

"‘Call You A Criminal’ is the most pop-like track we’ve ever put-out," muses singer Tyler. "It harbours the frustration and complexities of timing and distance in a relationship, becoming locked off from someone physically and beginning to resent the place you find yourself. In my case it’s a city, London, a concrete barrier I have a strong love / hate relationship with. I’ve been here a little while, and it’s safe to say I’m on better terms with the city now, but I wrote this song early on whilst I was feeling a little enclosed. Ultimately it’s inescapable, a release, and learning how to navigate relationships from the inside out."

So rest assured there is depth to The Manatees' pop delight - the debut 'Dream In Colour' EP came out in April and openly tackled the anxieties of finding your feet in an ever-changing world, emphasising the desperateness and loneliness of growing up. Yet even this couldn't quell The Manatees' hyper-popping genre-hopping essence rare, inspiring sold out shows at The Victoria and Sebright Arms and warranting a Jack Saunders Next Wave interview on Radio One as well as much love from Steve Lamacq at BBC 6music.

Next up come these big-trousered live shows here:
